I Heart Faces - Autumn Splendor

It's that time again! This week's photo challenge is "Autumn Splendor". Meet Claire! This is a very spunky and energetic little girl, as you can see from this photo. Her and friend Rocco loved playing in the leaves, and I loved being there to capture this moment.

I chose this photo because she's precious, of course. But also, it was such a fan favorite. My good friend Sara and I both own photo businesses and often discuss how funny it is when the photos we love most aren't a favorite of our clients. We put lots of time and love into shooting and then editing our images and sometimes our favorites just aren't our client's favorites! Or, as in this case, photos we only reluctantly edit (usually because we think it's technically flawed in some way) and show turn out to be a hit! I love this about my job. I am constantly challenged, and constantly growing, both as a photographer and business owner. :)

I Heart Faces - Let Them Be Little!

I am a proud "aunt" to these two awesome kiddos, Rocco and Claire. I have known their mama's since we were their age and it has been such a blessing to watch them grow. This shoot excited me so much, I can't wait to start shooting more as I venture into new territory of making my business a full-time gig. Yay!

I'm baaaack!

It's been just about 3 months since I had my little peanut and my world has completely changed! :) He's the light of my life, as I'm sure all parents say of their babies. But I have hopped back in the saddle and am excited to start shooting again!

This is another entry I am submitting at "I Heart Faces." The category is "hands". I took this shot of my little guy and his very proud grandpa. I was excited to see this weeks category because I have always had an interest in shooting hands. There are so many stories in a persons hands. There is the physical nature of the hands that tell you how old the person might be, or what they do for a living. There's also the gesture. In this case, my fathers hands up close show that he has worked with his hands his whole life. They are tough and weathered, hands of a career construction worker. Yet his gesture is so nurturing, reflecting the enormous love he has for his first grandson. I am lucky to have him for a father, and Austin is lucky to have him for a grandfather!

Baby Lucas - 6 months old!

Baby Lucas is 6 months old already? Is it possible? Time goes by so fast! This little guy is soooo sweet. He was such a trooper, posing for us and even giving us lots of smiles! And Jackson may be two, but he cooperated just long enough for me to snap a few of him and his brother. I look forward to many more shoots with two of my favorite little guys on the planet. :)

This shoot was extra special fun. I got to hang out with my old friend, Zack, his wife Candace, and their one-year-old twins, Julia and Zoe. 2nd Annual Father's Day Short Shoot!

I am so excited for year number two of the Father's Day Short Shoot! New location, new equipment, new fabulous photos of you and yours! I hope you can make it!

Details:

Who: You, your kids, your hubby, the whole family, whoever!

What: This mini shoot is designed for us to create a one-of-a-kind professional photo gift for the men in your life! The cost is $50 (plus tax and shipping) and includes one 5x7. Your photos will be loaded onto my online Smugmug gallery and you will be able to order more than the 5x7 if you wish.

Where: Parkville Park, right off 9 Highway

When: Starting at 10am I am booking 30 minute sessions. The great thing about mini sessions is that 30 minutes is about how long it takes for kids to start getting cranky, but by then they are already done! Voila!

Photo Challenge - Sun Flare

This weeks challenge at I Heart Faces is "sun flare". It's especially exciting because it's something I've recently been experimenting with and I can say that I love LOVE the effect!

This image is from a wedding I shot alongside my good friend and talented photographer, Sara Morris of Sara Morris Photography. I assisted her as a second shooter and it was not only a great learning experience, as I was just getting started shooting weddings on my own, but it was great fun!

Keegan

Meet Keegan, a squirrelly little doll with lots of personality! She was really fun to photograph with all her expressions and energy. Thanks to her grandparents, the parents of a best friend of mine, for having me to their house. They are cherished friends and I had a LOT of fun yesterday!

Lucas Bryant

Awww, this little guy is so precious! It's still hard to believe how tiny they are when they are only two weeks old. This is little Lucas, the son of two very dear friends. He wasn't sure how he felt about being put on the spot all afternoon, poor guy! I hope he doesn't remember how I tortured him. He has to get used to Auntie Rachel's camera in his face all the time! I can't wait to capture him growing, like I have with older brother Jackson. It's been such an honor. Love these boys!

A break from Winter hibernation!

Just like every Winter, I am wondering why I have to suffer through 6 whole months of cold weather, especially as a photographer! I miss my Spring and Summer busy months, having 2 or 3 shoots on a gorgeous day at the park. Ahhh, but as I learned during my years in San Francisco, having a cold season does make you appreciate the warm season all that much more. :)

This blog post is a little more personal to me. Each year as Christmas gifts to my in-laws I do a shoot of the Petersen grandkids. I very much look forward to it, and love adding the previous years photos to albums, flipping the pages and seeing how they have grown. I shot these in October, but didn't want to ruin the surprise by posting these before Christmas, so now I'm dusting them off to post mid-Winter.

I am obviously a very proud step mom (or bonus mom, as we call it in our family). Devin is getting so tall and handsome. But more than that, he is really a very cool kid. Always a smile on his face, always cracking us up, always performing a tune, skit, joke, whatever pops into his head.

I am also a very proud Aunt. My three nieces are so much fun to be with, in different ways. My favorite thing about Courtney is her calming presence. She can put me at ease just by being around and that is a wonderful skill to have! Annie is a feisty thing, and as a feisty person myself, she really cracks me up. Madison has an old soul, and it's really fun to watch her put Devin in his place when he's being ornery. But she is also very creative and sweet and I love that about her too.

I also want to thank each and every one of my clients from last year. For my first year in business, I couldn't have asked for more success. Thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart! It is because of you that I get to do what I love.

We couldn't have ordered a more perfect day at Loose Park today. Every other photographer in the city seemed to have the same idea! I had to fight over a few spots, but it was worth it. My first shoot was of the extended Horn family. I have known Randy and his son Travis since I was born, and the rest of the gang for almost as long, so this was a special shoot for me! I am very sad this Fall is coming to an end soon, but if this was the last of it, it sure went out with a bang!

This weeks contest at I Heart Faces is "Pink". I couldn't resist contributing this image of the Varner twins, Zoe and Julia. I used pink and purple flowers so we could tell the girls apart. I thought that maybe when they got older they might want to know which was which and wouldn't it be terrible if we had to say "I don't know!" :) Aren't they the sweetest?

Well this was officially the shortest shoot I've ever done! Just when we were starting to get really warmed up, the rain came POURING down! I was hoping the rain didn't catch us, but Mother Nature had a different plan. :) Luckily, this little family was so photogenic, I was able to get some good ones before the rains came. Lil' Baby B! Boy oh Boy am I loving all these baby sessions! This is my good friend, Brayden. I spent several hours with him and his parents on Sunday hanging out, taking pictures, and watching the Chiefs win again for a 3-0 record!!! So, happy Sunday all around. My favorite thing about this little guy was his expressions. He was a hoot!

Baby Luna

Wow, this shoot was an extra special treat! Baby Luna (don't you love that name?) was such a sweetie. I was my usual self in her bedroom, crawling around on the floor, crammed in corners and against cribs to get that perfect angle. I am sure that she was a little curious about this crazy lady in her face but she didn't show it. I had so much fun! And I got to play with my new Florabella actions, which are my new favorite toy! (Actions are a Photoshop tool to tweak your photos and give them a certain "look"). Little Luna deserved the best of the best! Another fun and successful shoot. :)

Bryson, Angela & Family

These are friends of mine from church. Bryson & Angela are two of the most compassionate and generous people I know. I was very excited to see their wonderful family in action today. Since it was so hot (sooooooooo hot!) we decided to shoot "on location", so, in their backyard. Tiny Twins

Meet Zoe and Julia! These little ladies were such good sports. They let us move them around and gently tug on their little tiny hands and feet to get them in the right positions. They are so little, it's fun to see how much babies change from week to week. This was my first ever itty bitty baby shoot, and each one has been really different just because of a few weeks growth! Thanks to the little ones and mom for letting me in on their lives for an afternoon. I had a blast as always! Hello Summer!

Summer is here and I have been as busy as I ever could have hoped! After every shoot I feel like I have learned something and grown as an artist. I love that feeling! I also love submitting photos every week for contests; it helps keep me moving. I have had several fun shoots over the last few weeks, and a big thank you thank you thank you to all my customers. I have had so much fun getting this business rolling. Here are a few pics from my photo session with the Delpercio's. Erin is a dear friend and her son Rocco and I have become fast friends as well. I have enjoyed watching him grow from the tiny bean he was in the hospital when he was first born. I was honored to do this shoot of their little family. :)

I Heart Faces - Teens

This week's challenge at I Heart Faces is "Teens". I have really been enjoying these challenges because it gives me momentum and I love getting and giving feedback to other great photographers. But also it helps me edit because you are only allowed one entry per challenge. This was a tough decision because I recently finished two super fun senior shoots. I decided on this photo for many reasons, but the biggest reason is because when I first pulled it up on my computer it took my breath away. I like the image visually, but also I think the "moment" I had with it is due to my sense of accomplishment in capturing the personality of this young woman, Sharra, who I had just met that day. I knew her friend Lisa and capturing Lisa's personality was somewhat easy. She is bubbly and full of energy. But a lot of the other photos I did of Sharra did not seem to capture the personality I felt oozing from her when I met her. She has an intensity, a wisdom. She carried herself with confidence. Her expression in this photo told me all of that. And I love it!

Indy Weddings

My wonderful and talented friend Sara of Sara Morris Photography asked me to be her second shooter for two weddings in Indianapolis last month and I jumped on it! I needed to get some more weddings under my belt and working with Sara was really valuable. Much thanks to her and both the wedding parties. I had tons of fun of course!

WindyIndyOshen- Road Trip 2010!

Wow, I am a little over half way through my journey on the road and it has been much more memorable than I could have ever imagined! Here's a little itty bitty summary: Indy, round one: had an absolute blast shooting the wedding with Sara and learned a lot. Sara has been so helpful to me in starting my business and she's also a lot of fun, which helps you unwind after a 10 hour shoot. :) Then I was off to Goshen, IN to spend some time with my family and also did a lot of shooting. Cousin Nate & Michelle's engagement, cousin Megan's graduation, and some of my cousin Lindsey & Ryan, just for fun. It was a busy day but I loved it of course. On Tuesday I made my way to Chicago but only got half way before my sweet little Honda died on the highway outside Gary, IN of all places! Thanks to the kindness of many strangers and friends, I was able to hop the train to Chicago and straight to the Cubs game, as planned. As I said, the trip is only about half way through, so we will see what the rest of the week has in store. Here are a few of my favorite images from the shoots in Goshen. Enjoy!

Wow, I can't say enough about how fun this shoot was! These girls were total troopers. It was raining most of the time we were out, but they had such a positive attitude from the beginning. Oh what a joy this shoot was! Little Maddison was such a trooper, even after a little fall in the grass. She hung in there while mom and I came up with several costume location changes. This was an important shoot for me because I love getting experience photographing babies at different stages. They change so much from week to week so I need all the practice I can get! Thanks to Maddison and Lindsay for letting me tag along for the afternoon; it was so much fun!

Jonathan's Performance Portraits

My very talented friend Jonathan asked me to do head shots to send out and I was a little nervous because it has been awhile since I used lighting equipment and shot in a formal setting. I did give him some head shots but we also had a great time doing some Rachel style shots in one of my favorite KC spots, Screenland Theatre! They were very gracious to allow me to use the theatre. (It also happens to be where I had my wedding reception :) ) Thanks to Jonathan and to Screenland and to my brand new MacBook Pro, Ella, who I suspect is going to make my life so much easier!

Spring Fever!

I'm ready for Spring! I love shooting outside the most and it's been a nasty Winter. I have had to get more creative for my portrait sessions, but luckily I really love shooting in the subjects' environment. This is a shoot I did of a little girl dear to my heart, Claire. Each shoot teaches me something, and working with little ones especially! Claire is always on the go, so I had to step up my game. It's great to be pushed like that, it's the only way to grow as a photographer. This was a really fun shoot and I'm so excited for shoots to start picking up again come Spring!

I am so fortunate to have so many friends with new babies! Thanks to one of them for letting me practice on her 2 month old baby girl. I learned ALOT about babies at that age; for instance, I didn't realize they don't smile much, they can't hold their heads up, or sit up at all. It was so helpful to practice posing them so that they are comfortable and I can still get a good shot. :) So much fun!

Jackson's First Year!

Awww shux, I love this kid! This is little Jackson, a.k.a, Gherkin. He is the son of two of my most cherished friends, Cassie and Travis, and I was so excited to do his one year photo-shoot! At his six month shoot, he sat up for the first time, and today he stood alone for the first time, so apparently he is a bit of a show-off. :) It was a gorgeous day at Loose Park and I had a blast rolling around in the leaves and grass with the little guy. And thanks to Cass and Trav for being such great non-paid photo assistants! They held my light disc for me, which was very helpful. Enjoy!!!

Starting this business has been so much fun! I am shooting as much as possible, especially now that the leaves have turned and produced such vivid backdrops. I am having a total blast shooting!
